Climate Change: A switch of four Republican votes would have defeated Waxman-Markey, the Democrats' global warming legislation. But like the Clinton Btu tax, the bill could die in the Senate and turn the House over to the GOP.
What were these RINOs thinking? The GOP is supposed to be the party of low taxes and free markets. Rep. Mike Castle, one of the eight offered an explanation right off of President Obama's teleprompter.
"Nations around the world are surging ahead with emission reductions and developing new energy technologies," Castle, Delaware's at-large congressman, posted on his House Web site. "The United States should be on equal footing, if not leading this effort to remain competitive."
Castle may not have noticed, but China and India have no intention of marching with us over the cliff. They are building coal and nuclear plants while scouring the world for oil. Countries like Spain have found that alternative energy costs two jobs for every "green" job created. This bill makes us competitive only with Somalia and Bangladesh.

Cap-and-Trade Means Regulate and Subsidize

Last week, prior to voting for the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009, House Republican Leader John Boehner spent the better part of an hour reading from the 1201-page bill and the associated 300-page addendum, which had been dumped on Congress' door at 3:09AM. He did so, he told The Hill, because he believed "people need to know what's in this pile of s-it."
Congressman Boehner was correct. There may be no better description of what's in this phony legislation, designed to supposedly halt global warming.
First, a couple quick facts:
Carbon dioxide is not a pollutant, it's a fertilizer. It accounts for a feeble .038 percent of the atmosphere. According to the Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center, a research wing of the Department of Energy, only 3.2 percent of that thin atmospheric component is created by anthropogenic emissions.

Currently being debated in Congress is a "Cap and Trade" bill.
Wrapped in the façade of saving the planet, it's an energy tax that would increase your household energy bill by $3,100.
The other week, Newt testified against this bill, trying to persuade the Chairman, Rep. Henry Waxman, that we don't need to punish the American people with more energy taxes.
If you believe that we can have both a good economy and a good environment, and you want to stop this disastrous energy tax, please call the Representatives listed below.
They have the ability to stop this bill.

WASINGTION — Today, in anticipation of Friday’s House Energy and Commerce Committee vote on the Waxman-Markey legislation, the National Black Chamber of Commerce (NBCC) released a new study that determines the potential economic impacts of the federal cap-and-trade system outlined in the bill. Compiled by CRA International, the analysis determines that by 2030 the law would:
- reduce national GDP roughly $350 billon below the baseline level;
- cut net employment by 2.5 million jobs (even after accounting for new “green” jobs); and
- reduce earnings for the average U.S. worker by $390 per year.

'Everyone Agrees': Waxman-Markey Will Increase Consumer Costs

In the ongoing saga revolving around the cost of cap-and-trade to the American economy, those of us saying it will increase costs and questioning whether the government would actually rebate the money were seconded by the most unlikely of individuals: The chairman of the House Ways & Means Committee, Charles Rangel (D-NY).
You might recall the words of Rep. John Dingell (D-MI), the former head of the Energy & Commerce committee, who said in April: "Nobody in this country realizes that cap and trade is a tax, and it's a great big one."
