Fiscal Conservatives Plan ‘Largest Gathering Ever’

Sunday, September 6, 2009

By Katharine Q. Seelye

A demonstration against government spending and “socialized health care” planned for Sept. 12 in Washington could become “the largest gathering of fiscal conservatives ever,” organizers said on Thursday.

Among the sponsors of the march is FreedomWorks, a conservative advocacy group that was instrumental in fueling opposition to health care overhaul at town-hall-style meetings this summer. The National Taxpayers Union and the Tea Party Patriots are also major sponsors.

The groups began building momentum earlier this year with opposition to President Obama’s $787 billion stimulus plan and bank bailouts. Over the summer, their opposition to big government spending found an outlet at the health care gatherings.

Fellow Tea Partiers,

If you’re concerned about the direction of the Tea Party effort, it is VERY important that you take a few moments to read and digest this entire email.

I’m writing you because I find the Tea Party effort in a very disconcerting position at the moment. I’ve been on vacation for the past few days, so I’m a little behind on all the news, but from what I’m reading it sounds like there has been a lot of things said internally, within the effort, that probably should not have been said.

...

I’m currently working with a coalition of folks that have opted to take a quieter, more strategic approach to the energy surrounding the Tea Party effort. We’re developing a two pronged plan for long term political activity within the free-market movement, and I want to invite you to be a part of this effort.

Grassroots 'tea parties' build strength

By Donald Lambro (Contact) | Sunday, May 10, 2009

The grass-roots "tea party" movement that swept across the country April 15 to protest federal tax and spending hikes will hold demonstrations in Washington and elsewhere this summer and fall when Congress will be battling over President Obama's biggest budget proposals.

Leaders of the Tax Day rallies that drew an estimated 600,000 people in nearly 600 cities and towns say the seemingly spontaneous local protests have grown into a more muscular movement concerned that the escalating growth and cost of government threatens to undermine economic freedom.

Organizers say rallies are planned here and around the nation on the Fourth of July to tie the movement's goals to the nation's founding principles; on Sept. 12, when Congress is expected to be in the midst of debate over Mr. Obama's plans on health care, energy and global warming; and on Oct. 2, when supporters expect that debate to be continuing.
